    Introduction

Interview by Marie-Laurence Lacour, La Gazette, no 31, page 4, 1998

Charles Belle, what inspired you to use large formats?
Impulse. My first large paintings were the walls of my room which I painted from floor to ceiling.

What does painting in these formats represent?
A physical confrontation, using my body like an athlete. I enjoy the total freedom of movement and sensuality - sweeping, caressing gestures like those of a lover or a dancer.

How do you work?
The canvas is always placed vertically against a wall. I now have a studio large enough to take these large formats.

Are you ever afraid you might be overwhelmed by these formats?
Never. They are constant challenge which stimulates and keeps old habits at bay. Both the artistic and physical aspects come through. I am more wary of my friend Mother nature than of large formats...
